Multiple versions of SQL Server 2005 - What order to install?

I currently have three SQL Server instances installed on my notebook. One is v8, which I believe is used by an accounting application. The other two are as follows:-

SQL Server MSSMLBIZ

SQL Server SQLEXPRESS

The second one (SQLEXPRESS) fails to start generating the following error:-

The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service terminated with service-specific error 17058 (0x42A2).

Other services listed in SQL Server Configuration Manager are:-

SQL Server Integration Services - which runs apparently normally.

SQL Server Analysis Services (MSSQLSERVER)

SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER)

SQL Server Browser

The last thre of these are run under LocalSystem.

I have been trying to install the SQLServer SP2 to the SQLEXPRESS instance for some number of days now, but each time it runs, it fails to install.

I am beginning to wonder if there is a sequence of installation for each of the above instances that should be followed. Can anyone give me any suggestions, or answers to the above problems?

Thanks,

It may be that the SQL Server Express installation is not using a 'good' login account.

Go to [Control Panel], [Admin Tools], [Services]. Find the SQLExpress instance, and double-click, then select the [Log On] tab. Select 'Local System Account', and start the service.

If it does not start, you need to uninstall and then re-install SQL Express.

If it does start up. refer to these articles about properly setting up a service account.

You might try changing the problem service to start by using the local system...

Multiple values into single cell

Taking the Northwind database as an example,
I have an order table: 'Orders'
a order details table: 'Order Details'
and a products table: 'Products'

For reasons best ignored, I want to produce a query which has columns:

Orders.OrderID, Products

which has results like:

10248, 'Queso Cabrales, Singaporean Hokkien Fried Mee, Mozzarella di
Giovanni'
10249, 'Tofu, Manjimup Dried Apples'

________
so for those who don't really know what I'm on about and haven't got
access to northwind, I want the second cell to contain the returned
column of a second query (but in text format)

could anyone suggest a way this could be done? am I entering the land
of cursors?

Many thanks,

If you are on SQL 2000, yes. SQL Server MVP Anith Sen covers the various
methods on http://www.projectdmx.com/tsql/rowconcatenate.aspx.

At least he isn't talking about storing the data that way, merely
outputting it that way. That said, I would do it in a separate
reporting layer (e.g. Crystal Reports) if at all possible.|||On May 21, 3:27 am, Ed Murphy <emurph...@.socal.rr.comwrote:

I know it's bad practice to do it that way and a seperate reporting
layer like crystal reports etc would be lovely, but I'm in a situation
where I don't have those kind of facilities and budgets at my
disposal. It's just a means to an end. I'm certainly not holding data
like that. It's bad enough dealing with internal politics without
having to deal with it again on here! Thanks to you all for your kind
(or not so kind) input.

Multiple transactions not working in package

I have a package with two sequence containers, each containing two SQL tasks and a data flow task, executed in that order. I want to encapsulate the data flow task in a transaction but not the SQL tasks. I have the TransactionOption property set to 'required' on the data flow tasks and 'supported' on the SQL tasks and the sequence containers. When I run the package I get a distributed transaction error on the first SQL task of the second sequence container:

"[Execute SQL Task] Error: Executing the query "TRUNCATE TABLE DistTransTbl2" failed with the following error: "Distributed transaction completed. Either enlist this session in a new transaction or the NULL transaction.". Possible failure reasons: Problems with the query, "ResultSet" property not set correctly, parameters not set correctly, or connection not established correctly."

The only way I can get the package to succeed is to set the TransactionOption = 'required' on the sequence containers and 'supported' on all subordinate tasks. This is not what I want, however. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Eric

Eric,

Can you please send me your package?

So far I couldn’t repro the problem.

|||

Eric, have you tried using a DELETE FROM statement instead of a truncate statement. Truncate doesn't log, so it's very fast, but is probably the reason you're blocking on your second task that's attempting to insert into the table.

Hi

I am getting the EXACT same problem, but I am not using any TRUNCATE statements or similar.

Actually, I find that the problem only seems to exist when I try to enlist a Data Flow task in a transaction.

If I have 2 sequence containers, each containing an Execute SQL Task, everything works fine. If I try to replace one of these with a Data Flow Task, then I get the same error.

Does anyone have a solution to this?

Multiple Sort Order Specification in EDB database

Hi,

I am using the EDB as a database in smart phone applications.I can able to mount the database , create the tables , write the records into the tables and read from the table with single sort order specification. But if i am using more than one sort order specification seek database is throwing an error message "The drive cannot locate a specific area or track on the disk".

I created one table named as Icon with more than one sort order specification. In this table i am giving pageid and iconid as sort order specifications. While saving the data into the database i am opening the database with pageid sort order and storing into the table.while reading from the database i am opening the database with iconid as sortorder. So here while seeking the database the above error is displaying. And i tried to read the data from the table by using pagid as sortorder speicification. It is working fine.I am applying the 3 sort order specifications for another table named as contentTable. but it is working fine with 3 sort order specifications.I had done the samething for icon table .But no use. Please help me regarding this.

Thanks in Advance,

Thanks & Regards,

Multiple Select Parameters

Hello,
Am I correct when I conclude that in order to support multiple
selections at runtime for parameters I would need to create a custom
interface?
I do not want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to.
Thank you in advance,
JerryThe simple way to do this is to have a text parameter and teach your users
to type in a comma delimited list. The problem is that they might not do it
correctly, and you can't prompt them with list of valid values..
Otherwise, you would have to do something special as you suggest...This is a
very common issue, and I hope one that is addressed in the next version...

I have successfully setup 3 parameters that are entered at runtime.
To do this I setup each parameter as a dataset then tied them together via
the report parameters.
For each report parameter the values come from the query of the dataset for
that parameter.
Works a treat.

I have successfully use 3 parameters on a report via the following method.
1.
Setup a dataset for each report parameter. You need a table that has only
those values that are valid for that field (unique) ie like a dimension table.
2.
Then in â'report parametersâ' for each parameter say that its values are
obtained from the query of the dataset for that parameter.
Works well

Teaching the user to enter manuel criteria is not qualified as a bad
workaround in 99% of real companies!
I guess such answers are only qualified to collect MVP points.

printing of various items that may be created throughout the day (or
over several days, possibly).
We plan to have a Batch table and a BatchItem table - the first time a
user designates a form for printing it creates a Batch record and a
BatchItem record. Additional forms designated for the batch add
BatchItem records, with a Batch ID as a foreign key.
When the report is printed, the Batch ID is passed as a parameter and
the BatchItem records are used to build the Where clause in the stored
procedure that provides data for the report.
Obviously, the management of all this must be handled on the
application end - but it will support any number of choices, with only
one parameter value needing to be passed to the report.
Your Batch table should identify the report type, and whether and when
the batch was printed - the BatchItem child table can have fields of
different data types to collect parameter values of those data types -
you just need to reference the correct field in the stored procedure.
Our concern is somewhat with performance - this approach calls for a
subselect in the stored procedure, and where we want to use other
parameter sets for the same report, the use of dynamic SQL in the
stored procedure so we can make use of either the Batch ID (if it is
provided) or an alternate set of parameters.
